Background of the Study

Economic hardship is a major social determinant of mental health, with financial insecurity often linked to increased rates of depression. Artisans in Bauchi State, who depend on manual labor or small businesses for their livelihood, face significant economic challenges. These challenges are exacerbated by the state's economic conditions, such as unemployment, inflation, and limited access to social support or healthcare. Studies have shown that individuals experiencing economic hardship are at higher risk of developing depression, as the stress of financial instability can lead to feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and emotional strain (Ahmed et al., 2023).

In Bauchi State, artisans, such as mechanics, carpenters, and tailors, often work in informal sectors where wages are inconsistent and job security is minimal. Economic strain, coupled with limited access to mental health services, means that artisans may not have adequate support for managing mental health challenges. Furthermore, cultural stigma surrounding mental illness in many Nigerian communities can prevent individuals from seeking help. This study will explore the relationship between economic hardship and depression rates among artisans in Bauchi State, aiming to identify the underlying factors and assess the impact of economic challenges on mental health.

Statement of the Problem

Economic hardship is a key factor influencing the mental health of individuals in Bauchi State, particularly among artisans who work in informal sectors. Despite the high prevalence of depression among artisans, there is insufficient research on how economic stress contributes to mental health challenges in this group. This study will investigate the link between economic hardship and depression, providing insight into how financial insecurity affects mental health and well-being among artisans in Bauchi State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the relationship between economic hardship and depression rates among artisans in Bauchi State.

2. To identify the socio-economic factors that contribute to depression among artisans in Bauchi State.

3. To assess the coping mechanisms employed by artisans to manage economic hardship and depression in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

1. What is the relationship between economic hardship and depression rates among artisans in Bauchi State?

2. What socio-economic factors contribute to depression among artisans in Bauchi State?

3. How do artisans cope with economic hardship and depression in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Economic hardship significantly contributes to the high prevalence of depression among artisans in Bauchi State.

2. Socio-economic factors, such as unemployment and low wages, are major contributors to depression among artisans in Bauchi State.

3. Coping mechanisms such as social support and religious practices mitigate the impact of economic hardship on depression among artisans in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on artisans in Bauchi State, particularly those in the informal sector. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing remote areas, as well as cultural barriers to discussing mental health issues.
